Vintage Revolution

Google’s much-anticipated Android open-source, cell phone software is expected to change the way we use cell phones by empowering consumers with a far wider range of choice. Up until now, consumers have been at the mercy of cell phone manufacturers and carriers. Google’s new mobile OS breaks down these barriers and puts control in the hands of the consumers.

Enter the Mimique concept phone, which is setting tech- and design- lovers’ hearts racing worldwide. Gizmodo.com has declared, “If anyone ever brings out a phone that looks like this, I’ll have 10 of them.”

The eye-catching Mimique is a response to feature-heavy cell phones that have evolved to the point that you can barely tell they are phones.

“As beautiful as the iPhone is, it’s hard to tell it from the iTouch iPod. There’s nothing in the iPhone’s form that communicates it’s a cell phone,” says RKS VP of Design, Lance Hussey. “And sometimes, a cell phone is all you need.”

RKS designers conceived of next generation touch-screen cell phone that harkened back to the cell phone’s early roots. The Mimique’s shape playfully mimics old-school phones that had exposed antennas.

Intended for users who don’t take themselves or their phones too seriously, the Mimique’s sleek form is designed to fit comfortably into your hand and slip easily into a pocket.

The combination of open-source software and touch-screen technology will make the Mimique easily upgradable. Today, if someone comes out with new software features, you often have to buy a new cell phone to get that feature. But with the Mimique, you’ll just download the new feature to your phone and you’re good to go. This will greatly extend the lifespan of the phone itself, because the features are never locked into the design.

Marrying retro-charm with next-gen technology, the Mimique is designed to take advantage of the surge in innovation sure to be generated by the debut of Google’s new open-source operating system.

The Mimique is already inspiring new visions of what Android applications may one day look like. The image at left depicts a concept for a GPS-based map interface where scrolling, save, and search “buttons” are nested in a graphic “frame” around the map image. A compass, fit perfectly onto the Mimique’s “antenna bump”, will keep you headed in the right direction.

As Android gives developers freedom to innovate, the Mimique concept gives consumers the freedom to customize as never before. For some, this may mean merely downloading a variety of “skins” to personalize the phone’s graphic interface. For others, it will mean downloading specialized features, programs, and games. Best of all, it means that you’ll no longer be forced to pay for options you don’t want. You get to pick and choose exactly the features you need to create your own perfect phone.

With the Mimique, you’ll always have the newest, coolest phone on the block, because it’s the one phone designed to be everything you want and nothing you don’t.
