HAMILTON VANTAGE
A modular updated design for Hamilton's automated liquid handling platform, which enables optimized storage, device integration, and transport space without sacrificing laboratory space.
What We Did
The Hamilton Vantage automated liquid handling platform was designed to enhance laboratory efficiency and flexibility by optimizing storage, device integration, and transport space—all while maintaining a compact footprint. Collaborating closely with Hamilton, we focused on design exploration and development, integrating their internal components into a refined, functional, and future-ready platform.
Psycho-Aestheticsâ„¢
Product design is more than just winning awards; it’s about creating emotional connections between the product and the user. Our human-centered approach, Psycho-Aesthetics, helps us understand and quantify these connections. We found that the opportunity zone for the JBL Eon Speaker line to be in the empowered section of the P/A Map. RKS Design positioned the Hamilton Vantage on the Psycho-Aesthetics Map as a modular, high-performance solution that balances functionality with user-centric adaptability.
The research phase of the Hamilton Vantage project focused on understanding the unique challenges faced by laboratory professionals in maximizing efficiency while managing limited workspace. Through ethnographic studies and stakeholder interviews, we uncovered the need for a modular, space-saving design that seamlessly integrates with laboratory workflows. Insights into user behaviors, pain points, and aspirations informed the direction of the project, emphasizing adaptability, compactness, and ergonomic usability.
During the design phase, we explored numerous concepts to create a platform that balanced functionality and aesthetics. Emphasizing modularity, we developed solutions that optimized storage and device integration while preserving the sleek, professional appearance Hamilton is known for. Our team collaborated with Hamilton to ensure the external design complemented their advanced internal technologies, delivering a cohesive and intuitive user experience.
In the refinement stage, we focused on fine-tuning the design to ensure it met both functional and manufacturing requirements. This process involved iterative prototyping, usability testing, and close collaboration with Hamilton’s engineering team to align the design with real-world laboratory applications. By addressing user feedback and technical constraints, we ensured the platform was both user-friendly and scalable for diverse laboratory needs.
The development phase marked the final transition of the Hamilton Vantage design into a production-ready solution. We worked closely with Hamilton to hand off detailed design documentation, ensuring seamless integration with their internal components and manufacturing processes. This collaborative effort culminated in the launch of a modular liquid handling platform that redefines laboratory efficiency, setting a new benchmark in automated lab solutions.
