REVA
An electronic hookah solution that utilizes traditional hookah tobacco to optimize and enhance the smoking experience by eliminating the use of coal and controlling the temperature and airflow to create an automated experience eliminating human error.
What We Did
The Reva Hookah redefines a centuries-old ritual through the lens of advanced engineering and contemporary luxury. A collaborative effort between RKS Design and Galaxy Concern, the project set out to reimagine the traditional hookah experience for a modern audience of over 100 million global users. Rooted in a deep respect for cultural heritage, Reva blends clean, sculptural aesthetics with groundbreaking technology—eliminating the need for charcoal, integrating smart safety features, and enhancing health outcomes. From personal lounges to upscale hospitality environments, Reva offers a refined, intuitive experience that’s as sophisticated as it is culturally resonant.
Psycho-Aesthetics™
Product design is more than just winning awards; it’s about creating emotional connections between the product and the user. Our human-centered approach, Psycho-Aesthetics, helps us understand and quantify these connections. RKS applied its proprietary Psycho-Aesthetics® methodology to ensure Reva resonated on both emotional and functional levels. By mapping user behaviors, cultural associations, and psychological triggers, the team translated centuries of tradition into a bold new expression of identity, ritual, and wellness. Every design decision—from the regal silhouette inspired by Nefertiti’s crown to the tactile, app-controlled interface—was informed by a deep understanding of what users value and how they aspire to feel.
The Reva Hookah began as a bold vision to transform a 500-year-old tradition into a modern, health-conscious experience. Galaxy Concern partnered with RKS Design to rethink the ritual of hookah smoking from the ground up—preserving its cultural roots while addressing its well-known health and usability challenges. Through extensive ethnographic research in Los Angeles hookah lounges, the RKS team uncovered key user frustrations: charcoal preparation, inconsistent heating, time-consuming cleaning, and accidental access by minors. These insights laid the foundation for a product that could elevate the experience for today’s global users—one rooted in tradition, yet fully reimagined for the future.
RKS Design led the conceptualization of Reva by applying its award-winning Psycho-Aesthetics® methodology, blending emotional resonance with intuitive functionality. The design team explored numerous form factors and aesthetic directions, ultimately drawing inspiration from the iconic headdress of Queen Nefertiti to create a silhouette that felt both regal and contemporary. Industrial design efforts prioritized simplicity and sophistication, while system architecture focused on modularity, safety, and premium materials. By removing charcoal in favor of induction-based heating, Reva not only eliminated toxins but opened the door to precise temperature control, streamlined usability, and a cleaner, smoother experience.
The refinement phase focused on testing and validating the system’s core technologies and user touchpoints. RKS explored multiple pod configurations—including stacked donut capsules and multi-flavor systems—to optimize flavor delivery, heat distribution, and ease of loading. Foam models and Frankenstein prototypes were created to evaluate ergonomics, airflow, and system performance in real-world settings. Each component, from the hose to the heating chamber, was redesigned for durability, cleanliness, and performance. Through dozens of iterations and design sprints, the Reva team fine-tuned the balance between cultural authenticity and cutting-edge usability—resulting in a product that delivers consistent clouds, smooth flavor, and minimal cleanup.
With a validated design in hand, the Reva project moved into detailed product development. RKS Design delivered a fully engineered solution complete with swappable battery packs, patented pod systems, secure app integration for age-restricted access, and a premium materials palette. Technical documentation, CAD models, and IP filings supported manufacturing and scalability efforts. The device was prototyped, tested, and finalized for a global launch. Reva stands as a testament to RKS’s integrated design, engineering, and innovation strategy—bridging culture and technology to redefine the hookah experience for a new generation of mindful, modern users.
