What We Did
RKS was tasked by Talis Biomedical with redefining women’s health through a point of care solution that enabled patients to receive their test results in 20 minutes. A task that would have previously taken a week. RKS worked with Talis to develop a holistic solution including physical, digital, and brand touchpoints for a system that would provide STD test results the same day at the physician’s office instead of from a third party diagnostic company. The challenge was to develop a system that’s easily used by physicians’ assistants and other employees who don’t have formal training in running diagnostic machines. In close collaboration with Talis, the team developed a User Experience that passed CLIA Waived compliance standards. Following the development of the product with RKS, Talis raised $5.6M from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and $4.4M from CARB-X to support testing and launch. Together with Talis, we are taking point of care to new heights and transforming patient experience.

Our human-centered approach, Psycho-Aesthetics, helps us understand and quantify these connections. Our design firm uses it to create innovative products, technologies, services, brands, and more. We aim to create solutions that are relevant and impactful, using our approach to grow our clients’ businesses. With Psycho-Aesthetics as our foundation, we work with clients to establish a common language that can be used throughout our relationship. RKS and Talis Biomedical kicked off this collaboration with P/A. When mapping Talis, it was found that the opportunity zone was perfectly in-between the artistic and enriched quadrants, high in self-actualization and in the middle of interactivity.
One of the key challenges we faced was developing a system that could be easily operated by physicians’ assistants and other employees without formal training in running diagnostic machines. Through meticulous research, strategic thinking, and innovative industrial design, we created a user experience that met the rigorous standards of CLIA Waived compliance.
Designed to enable a fast sample-to-answer workflow, the Talis One Test System ensures that patients receive the accuracy of lab-run tests while providing clear results in less than 30 minutes. Our expertise in industrial design shines through in the sleek and intuitive touch screen interface, guiding users through the testing and reporting process seamlessly. With the Talis One instrument, you can expect a simple plug-and-play setup, allowing you to swiftly transition to clinical testing upon receiving your system.
By combining our multidisciplinary capabilities in industrial design, branding, strategy, research, and user experience, we have established ourselves as leaders in the field. Our strength lies in our proficiency of considering the needs of our target audience. This is made possible through our Psycho-Aesthetics methodology, which allows us to understand target audiences on a deeper level. The research and strategy executed during the development of this project offered us a deep understanding of critical areas in point of care solutions, leading us to create a visually appealing and user-friendly product.
Our collaboration with Talis on the creation of the Talis One Test System has not only transformed patient experiences but also garnered significant recognition and support. The successful development of this groundbreaking product led Talis to secure $5.6M in funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and an additional $4.4M from CARB-X, reflecting the impact and potential of our collaborative efforts.
