Fluent cell imaging often required bulky, complex microscopes and extensive operator training. Thermo Fisher aimed to offer a productivity enhancing solution featuring automation, intuitive operation, and a sleek form that improves bench space efficiency without sacrificing imaging quality.
We conducted on site lab field studies to track preferences, pain points, and divergent workflows. Technicians expressed frustration with manual focus, limited lab space, and inconsistent imaging. RKS used our Psycho‑Aesthetics® model to define a system experience that balanced confidence, ease, and spatial harmony.

How We Used Psycho-Aesthetics™ to Identify Unique Opportunities in the Project.
Using our proprietary Psycho-Aesthetics® 2.0 framework, we conducted in-depth interviews and ethnographic observation in diverse lab settings. We identified key emotional and usability pain points — such as intimidation with complex interfaces, workspace clutter, and trust in precision. These insights guided both the form and interface strategy, ensuring approachability and confidence in operation.
RKS designed a streamlined chassis, compact enough to fit on busy lab benches yet roomy enough to house motorized optics and filters. Clear access hatches, self calibrating trays, and integrated lighting zones were designed for visibility and intuitiveness. Attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the design, from the carefully selected materials to the intuitive interface.
